2001 / BDSAINT.COM
One frustrated chatter. One small screen. One big idea.
Before apps, algorithms and endless feeds, there was a simple belief: chat could be better. BDSaint began in 2001 as a WML chat site built for the mobile web of its day — and it grew into a career, a community and the work we do now.

THE BEGINNING
It began with the kind of annoyance that refuses to stay quiet.
In 2001, the mobile internet was a very different place. Screens were tiny, connections were slow and the web arrived through WAP browsers in short bursts. You made every character earn its place. Yet even then, people were finding each other: choosing nicknames, entering rooms and spending hours in conversations with strangers who quickly stopped feeling like strangers.
The experience on 2wap Chat was frustrating enough to spark a decision: instead of carrying on complaining about it, why not build something better? There was no ready-made course, no drag-and-drop site builder and no neat blueprint waiting at the end of a search result. There was curiosity, stubbornness and a lot to learn.
That is how bdsaint.com was born. WML came first, followed by PHP and MySQL — learned by doing, fixing, breaking things and trying again. The result was a chat site that belonged to its community rather than a borrowed corner of somebody else’s.
THE JOURNEY
From a WAP page to a working life on the web.
-
2001
bdsaint.com goes live
A self-taught WML chat site takes shape on the early mobile web. It is lean by necessity, but ambitious in spirit: a place where people can sign in, join a room and have a real conversation.
-
2001–2004
Learning becomes building
The site demands more than an idea. PHP and MySQL join the toolkit, and each improvement teaches the next lesson: how to handle people, content, data, uptime and the small details that make an online space feel alive.
-
2005
The name moves to bdsaint.co.za
As the community grows, bdsaint.com becomes bdsaint.co.za. At its height, BDSaint was the biggest WAP chat in South Africa — a remarkable thing for a project that started with one person deciding the existing experience was not good enough.
-
THE CHAT YEARS
A community makes the place
The technology mattered, but the people made BDSaint. Rooms filled, nicknames became familiar and conversations crossed places, time zones and backgrounds. It was proof that a small screen could still hold a big world — and that the most valuable feature of a chat site was always the person on the other side.
-
NEXT
From BDSaint’s chat to chat sites for others
People noticed what had been built and began asking for something similar. The original project became work: building chat sites for other owners, solving their practical problems and learning what it takes to support an online service beyond the first launch day.
-
TODAY
From chat to the complete digital picture
Chat sites led to websites. Websites led to domains, hosting, email, support and the everyday work of helping businesses show up properly online. The tools have changed dramatically, but the approach remains familiar: understand the real need, keep the solution clear and build something people can actually use.
A JOURNEY THROUGH CITIES
Cape Town → Johannesburg → Cape Town.
The BDSaint journey did not stay in one place. It began in Cape Town, travelled to Johannesburg as life and work opened up new chapters, and today has come full circle back to Cape Town. The route has changed; the instinct to make useful things has not.
There is something fitting about returning to where it started. BDSaint is not trying to recreate the internet of 2001. It is bringing forward the good part of it: directness, curiosity, independence and the simple pleasure of connecting people to the things they came looking for.
WHAT CAME NEXT
Today, BDSaint does more.
What began with one WAP chat now reaches across the practical parts of being online: thoughtful website design, reliable hosting, domains, email, support and the space to grow. The work is broader, but it is still grounded in the same early lesson: technology is only useful when it helps real people do something meaningful.
And the original conversation is not forgotten. BDSaint Chat is open again — a new home for an old community, with the same welcome waiting on the other side of the screen.
